Sisi ratifies waste management law

ArabFinance: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el Sisi officially approved the law bill regulating garbage management in the country, Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad said in an October 16th statement.

Under the new law, a state agency will be in charge of the waste management process, including organizing, monitoring, and supervision, Fouad added.

The House of Representatives first gave a green light for the legislation last August.

The new Act includes investment incentives besides other measures to encourage garbage collectors, small companies, private contractors, and recycling centers to be part of the formal management system.

The government previously revealed its intention to incorporate the informal waste system into a more formal sector to help maintain its sustainability.

Last month, Fouad said the state would establish waste stations at a total cost of EGP 57.2 million.
