Egypt sets new rules for malls, retail stores, other outlets

ArabFinance: Egypt’s Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawy issued a decree regulating the opening hours of several food and services outlets, which will be implemented as of December 1st, according to a November 20th statement.

All commercial outlets and shopping malls, excluding cafés and restaurants, will open from Saturdays to Wednesdays at 7 am until 10 pm in winter days and 10 pm in the summer. Meanwhile on Thursdays, Fridays, and official holidays, the closing time will be at 11 pm in the winter and 12 am in the summer.

Cafes and restaurants can open from 5 am until 12 am in the winter and 1 am in summer days. On Thursdays, Fridays, and official holidays, the closing time will be 1 am in both winter and summer.

The statement indicated that the take-away service will be available for 24 hours any time of the year.

As for maintenance and crafts stores in residential areas, the opening hours will be from 8 am until 6 pm in the winter and 7 pm in summer days.

The decisions exclude grocery stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, and bakeries, as well as other food outlets.

Shaarawy highlighted that summer days in Egypt begin each year on the last Friday in April until the last Thursday in September.

Governorates dependent on tourism will have different opening hours, based on authorities’ decisions, according to the statement.
