Egypt considers launching 2 hydropower projects

Arab Finance: The Egyptian government has finalized studies to launch two hydroelectric power generation projects through pumping and storage systems with combined capacities of up to 2,000 megawatts (MWs), a government official told Asharq Business.

Investments into the two projects could reach up to $2.5 billion, given the technologies they employ, the official said.

He added that the studies conducted by the government include two locations; one in Luxor and the other in Qena, with a capacity of 1,000 MW each.

The studies showed that the projects will utilize the Nile River water instead of the sewage water.

The official stressed that Ministry of Electricity is seeking to offer the two projects to investors over the coming period, in light of the country’s goal to reduce reliance on electrical energy generated from fossil fuel and shift toward clean energy.
