NTRA sets new measures to cut off spam calls starting August 24th

Arab Finance: The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has issued new technical and regulatory measures to curb spam calls as of Sunday, August 24th, as per an announcement.

Under the new measures, mobile phones found to be making unauthorized spam calls will be disconnected as part of a broader effort to protect users’ privacy and address growing complaints from citizens.

The NTRA had earlier introduced regulations for the use of mobile lines in promotional and commercial calls, allowing companies to register their numbers and activities legally.

Since its launch last year, around one million lines have subscribed to this service, enabling users to see the caller’s name and number and choose whether to answer.

The authority urged companies and individuals still making promotional calls without registration to immediately subscribe to the service through their telecom providers to avoid having their lines disconnected.

In addition to the technical measures, the NTRA said it would continue to take legal action against violators. Companies that breach the law could face fines and imprisonment.

The regulator also reminded citizens that they can report nuisance calls through multiple channels, including mobile operators’ call centers, the NTRA hotline (155), its “My NTRA” mobile application, and the website fraud.tra.gov.eg.
