Arab Finance: The Egyptian government is planning to cultivate up to 150,000 feddans of short-staple cotton within three years by adding 50,000 feddans annually, Minister of Public Business Sector Mohamed Shimy stated.
The announcement was made during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to follow up on the development of industrial projects.
The guarantee price of Egyptian cotton per quintal has been set at EGP 10,000 in Upper Egypt and EGP 12,000 in Lower Egypt, Shimy said.
He added that the country has cultivated 311,000 feddans of cotton this year, compared to 250,000 feddans last year.
Moreover, Shimy pointed out that the country’s expected production of cotton is estimated at 1.9 million quintals during the current harvest season.
