Arab Finance: Telecom Egypt (ETEL) has inked an agreement with Medusa Submarine Cable System to extend Medusa to the Red Sea, according to a press release on September 28th.
Under the agreement, the 8,760-kilometer-long submarine cable will land in Port Said by the end of 2025 to be linked to the landing stations of Suez, Zafarana, and Ras Ghareb in the Red Sea via the extensive terrestrial crossing network of Telecom Egypt.
This connection will give direct access to all the Medusa Mediterranean landings in Europe and North Africa to the Red Sea.
“Egypt’s unique position between Europe, Asia, and Africa, complemented with Telecom Egypt’s diligent efforts and extensive expertise in the subsea cable landscape, promote the company’s position as a go-to global digital hub and enable it to attract and collaborate with mega industry players,” Telecom Egypt’s Managing Director and CEO Mohamed Nasr commented.
For his part, CEO of Medusa and AFR-IX telecom Norman Albi said: “With a partner like Telecom Egypt, we will be able to unleash the full potential of Medusa and extend it towards the Red Sea, further enabling enhanced regional connectivity and providing more efficient connectivity to the whole world.”
In 2022, Telecom Egypt signed a landing party agreement with Barcelona-based AFR-IX Telecom for the landing of Medusa, the Mediterranean’s largest submarine cable system, in Egypt.
