Arab Finance: Egypt’s production of long-staple cotton declined by 32% during the 2023 harvest season to 85,000 tons, compared to 125,000 tons last year, a government official told Asharq Business.
The official ascribed this to the decrease in the cotton cultivated areas by 25% year on year (YoY) from 337,000 feddans to 254,000 feddans.
This decline came due to the increase in the prices of competitive fodder and oil crops, prompting farmers to grow these crops instead of cotton, the source added.
