ArabFinance: The Egyptian telecommunication sector grew by 16.7% year-on-year (YoY) during fiscal year (FY) 2021/2022, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Amr Talaat revealed in a speech before the Senate on December 25th.
Within the framework of the state’s digital transformation plan, the government has launched over 165 services on the Digital Egypt platform, Talaat stated.
A great number of digital transformation project are being implemented with up to EGP 50 billion in investment, in collaboration with various sectors including agriculture, healthcare, higher education, housing, and construction, Talaat highlighted.
Regarding the communication ministry’s efforts in supporting digital innovation and entrepreneurship, he noted that a plan is being carried out across all governorates to increase the number of creativity centers to 30 from only three centers, with EGP 5 billion in investments.
The ministry plans to upgrade the digital infrastructure and enhance telecommunication services through several projects, including a project for linking 33,000 government buildings with the fiber optical network at a cost of EGP 7 billion, he said.
Moreover, the ministry seeks to connect 3.5 million houses with the fiber-optics network at a cost of EGP 60 billion under the Hayah Karema initiative, the minister added.
The ministry also plans to spend EGP 100 billion on upgrading the fixed broadband internet network in three phases, Talaat maintained.
The minister added that Egypt was ranked first in Africa in terms of the average fixed internet speed.
