Power outages in Egypt to last until end-August: Sources

Arab Finance: Electricity blackouts in Egypt are expected to last until at least the end of August, albeit at a slower pace, until all the necessary petroleum products to operate power stations are provided, two unnamed government sources familiar with the matter told Asharq Business on July 27th.

One of the sources confirmed that the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources boosted the quantities of diesel supplied to power stations by no less than 25,000 tons per day.

The ministry also slightly raised the quantities of natural gas supplied to power stations, the source added.

It was recently reported that the electricity crisis has prompted Egypt to reduce the natural gas supply for several fertilizer factories by 20% starting this week.

As a result of the persistent heatwave, the state-owned Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) has been obliged since mid-July to cut power in various areas of the country for up to an hour several times due to the lake of natural gas to run power plants.

The electricity crisis is the first of its kind in nine years since 2014.
