Egypt, South Africa discuss economic cooperation in automotive, logistics

Arab Finance: Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El-Khatib explored ways to enhance economic relations between Egypt and South Africa, according to a statement.

In his meeting with South Africa’s Minister of Trade and Industry Parks Tau, El-Khatib reviewed the industrial cooperation agreement in the automotive sector between Egypt and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).

He noted that they are developing a roadmap for the future steps to study this proposal, taking into account the specific considerations of Egyptian manufacturers.

El-Khatib touched upon the possibility of establishing joint logistics zones, with both ministers emphasizing that specialists in the two countries would identify the suggested economic zones and ports.

The meeting also addressed developing regular shipping lines between Egypt and South Africa, as both sides agreed to discuss the topic after designating areas and ports for the logistics zones.

Moreover, specialists from both countries will make a list of targeted goods for expanded bilateral trade.

The two ministers also reviewed plans to establish a joint Egyptian-South African Business Council.

Finally, they agreed that the fifth session of the Egyptian-South African Joint Committee would be held during the first quarter (Q1) of 2026.
