In 2023, Egypt's intellectual property (IP) landscape revealed notable insights into its patent and trademark protection. The country earned a patent protection score of 4.8, ranking 89^th globally and 5^th in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

For trademarks, Egypt achieved a score of 6.274, placing it 33^rd worldwide and 2^nd regionally. These statistics highlight Egypt’s evolving IP environment, reflecting its progress and positioning within both regional and global contexts.

According to the most recent Global Innovation Index data, Egypt ranked 50^th worldwide in 2022 for the number of patent applications, securing the 2^nd position among Arab nations, just behind Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Egypt achieved a global ranking of 53^rdfor trademark filings, reflecting its growing emphasis on intellectual property and innovation.
In 2023, the total number of patent applications in Egypt reached 2,101, marking a 9.8% increase from the previous year. Of these applications, 65.7% were filed by foreigners residing in Egypt, while Egyptians contributed just 34.3% of the total. This distribution highlights the significant role that international applicants play in Egypt's patent landscape.
In 2023, the number of approved or registered patents in Egypt dropped to 317 from 512 in 2022. Among these, 246 patents, or 77.6%, were granted to foreigners, while Egyptians received 22.4% of the patents.
Among foreign patent applicants in Egypt, Americans led with a 13.6% share, followed by Germans at 8.8%.
Approximately 25% of the registered patents in 2023 were in the field of human needs, followed closely by 24.3% in the domains of physics and chemistry. The fields of formation and transportation accounted for 16.1% of the patents.
In 2023, there were 52,853 trademark applications in Egypt, reflecting a remarkable annual growth rate of 73.7%. Egyptians came on top of all applicants with a share of 90%.
Out of the 52,853 trademark applications in 2023, only 16,659 trademarks were granted. Of these, 11,869 trademarks, or 75.8%, were awarded to Egyptians. American applicants received 6.9% of the granted trademarks, while Emirati applicants received 2.7%.
