Arab Finance: Egypt and Ethiopia have jointly decided to begin urgent negotiations to reach an agreement regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) within four months, according to a joint statement issued on July 13th.
This consensus came during a meeting between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed.
“The two leaders reaffirmed their mutual political will to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, politically, economically and culturally, based on the common desire to achieve their common interests and the prosperity of the two brotherly peoples,” the statement reads.
Ahmed said that his country is committed to cause no harm to Egypt’s and Sudan’s shares of water while filling the dam during the hydrological year 2023/2024.
On July 12th, the Ethiopian prime minister arrived in Cairo to participate in Sudan’s Neighboring Countries Summit.
It is worth noting that previous GERD discussions, which brought together mediators such as the US and the African Union (AU), failed to reach any binding agreement on filling and operating the dam.
