Egypt, AFD, EU commit €61.5M to complete Jabal Al-Asfar water treatment plant

Arab Finance: Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat signed a development financing agreement worth €50 million and a grant worth €1.5 million with the French Development Agency (AFD) for the third phase of the Jabal Al-Asfar water treatment plant project, as per a statement by the Egyptian ministry.

Al-Mashat also witnessed the signing of a €10 million grant agreement between the European Union (EU) and the AFD, bringing total funding to €61.5 million.

The project aims to contribute to improving wastewater treatment services by implementing one of the largest water treatment plants in Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa, within the framework of the state’s efforts to promote sustainable management of water resources.

The plant is expected to serve 17.5 million people by 2040 through wastewater collection and treatment services.

The third phase is set to contribute to increasing the plant’s capacity by 1 million cubic meters per day through the use of advanced technology, which enables the provision of treated water for agricultural irrigation.
