Arab Finance: Telecom Egypt has joined the FTSE Emerging Markets Index after moving from the Small Cap to the Mid Cap segment of the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS), as per a press release.
The upgrade was announced as part of FTSE Russell’s September 2026 semiannual review for the Middle East and Africa. It follows an increase in Telecom Egypt’s market capitalization to approximately $3.9 billion as the company’s shares reached new highs, placing it well above the minimum threshold for Mid Cap classification.
The change also confirms that Telecom Egypt has fulfilled the segment’s eligibility requirements, which cover market capitalization, liquidity, trading volumes, and free float.
Telecom Egypt attributed the upgrade to its financial and operational performance, stronger cash flows, and improved stock liquidity. The company said the transition reflects its efforts to accelerate cash generation, maintain financial discipline, use resources efficiently, and direct capital toward higher-return opportunities.
The Mid Cap classification could increase Telecom Egypt’s exposure to international funds that track FTSE Russell indices. It may also support trading activity and strengthen the company’s visibility and credibility among global institutional investors.
“This upgrade represents international recognition of what we have achieved in terms of sustainable growth, financial discipline, and our ability to create real, long-term value for our shareholders and investors,” Telecom Egypt Managing Director and CEO Tamer El Mahdi said.
Telecom Egypt is one of only three Egyptian companies currently included in the FTSE Russell Emerging Markets Index. The benchmark covers large- and mid-cap equities across emerging markets and is used by major investment funds and institutions when allocating their portfolios.
The development also broadens the representation of the Egyptian Exchange (EGX) in global capital markets. The EGX provides advisory and guidance services to listed companies to improve their competitiveness and increase their representation in international indices.
