Future of Egypt buys about 5 wheat cargoes as Black Sea supplies tighten

Arab Finance: Egypt’s state grain buyer Future of Egypt has purchased about five wheat cargoes this week as disruptions to Black Sea exports restrict supplies, six unnamed trading sources told Reuters.

The deals come as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine disrupts shipments from two countries that together supplied more than 82% of Egypt’s wheat imports in the first half of 2026. Reciprocal attacks on ports, export terminals and commercial vessels have led shippers to postpone or cancel deliveries, pushing importers to look elsewhere for supplies.

Some Russian exporters have shifted cargoes to Baltic ports to bypass the disruption, although traders say those routes can handle far smaller volumes than the Black Sea.

It is worth mentioning that Egypt purchased about 4.72 million tons of locally grown wheat during the 2026 procurement season, nearly 20% more than a year earlier but below the government's 5 million-ton target.

The higher purchases followed an increase in the state procurement price. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced in April that farmers would receive EGP 2,500 per ardeb, up 6.4% from last season’s highest price of EGP 2,350.
