Cairo bans new café, restaurant licenses in 4 key districts amid resident complaints

Arab Finance: Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced a decision to ban the issuance of new licenses for cafés and restaurants in the districts of Heliopolis, Maadi, Zamalek, and Garden City, while maintaining licenses for existing establishments, as per a statement.

Saber said the decision responds to a growing number of complaints from residents, non-governmental organizations, and civil society groups.

These stakeholders have raised concerns over the impact of the rapid and unregulated expansion of cafés and restaurants, citing increased noise and disturbances.

Residents and advocacy groups also pointed to the conversion of residential properties into commercial and administrative spaces, which they say undermines the architectural character and heritage of these districts.

The governorate framed the measure as part of efforts to preserve the distinctive identity of these neighborhoods and address quality-of-life concerns.
