Arab Finance: Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat met with a delegation from Copelouzos Group to review the latest progress on the Egypt-Greece electricity interconnection project, according to a statement.

The meeting addressed the technical and economic studies conducted for the solar and wind power project, which aims to export up to 3 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from Egypt to Europe via the Greek power grid.

The officials also discussed proposed locations for renewable energy projects, the development of transmission lines to link new generation capacity, and the outcomes of discussions between Egypt's and Greece's electricity transmission system operators and the project developer.

Moreover, the talks covered plans to strengthen the national electricity grids in both countries and assess the readiness of the transmission networks to accommodate the additional cross-border capacity.

For his part, Esmat reaffirmed the government's strategic commitment to expanding electricity interconnection projects and reinforcing integration with neighboring countries' power grids.  

The project supports Egypt's ambition to become a regional energy hub and a gateway for electricity exchange between Africa, Europe, and Asia, he added.

He also noted that the project aligns with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's vision to expand renewable energy, reduce reliance on conventional fuels, and improve the utilization of Egypt's renewable energy resources.

In a previous meeting with El-Sisi, Esmat revealed that about 105 projects are included in the second phase and outlined the progress of connecting renewable energy projects to the electricity grid by 2027, including solar and wind power.
