Arab Finance: Egypt’s unified electricity grid handled a record peak load of 40,000 megawatts (MW) on Tuesday, August 11, up 200 MW from last year’s peak and up 700 MW from Monday’s 39,300 MW, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy said, citing data from the National Energy Control Center (NECC).

The national grid successfully absorbed the unprecedented increase in demand, supported by plans to enhance operational efficiency, maintenance programs, and measures implemented in line with international quality standards and technical codes, as per the ministry.

The ministry noted that electricity consumption has been registering exceptional daily increases during the current summer, placing additional pressure on the national grid as temperatures rise.

In 2025, the grid recorded a peak load of 39,800 MW on a single day during a severe heatwave, the ministry said.

For his part, Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat directed the ministry and its affiliated entities to raise the grid’s state of readiness and intensify the deployment of emergency, maintenance, and technical support teams.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian government is stepping up preparations to meet an anticipated 8% increase in electricity demand this summer as compared to last year.

In June, Esmat revealed that about 105 projects are included in the second phase and outlined the progress of connecting renewable energy projects to the electricity grid by 2027, including solar and wind power.
