Madbouly reviews progress on Alexandria Metro project as Phase 1 hits 47% completion

Arab Finance: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly inspected the progress of the first phase of the Alexandria Metro project during a tour of Alexandria Governorate, describing the project as a major addition to the governorate’s public transportation network and a key component of Egypt’s shift toward modern, environmentally friendly mass transit, as per a statement.

Accompanied by Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir, Madbouly reviewed construction progress on the project, which is part of the state’s broader efforts to develop sustainable transportation infrastructure and provide modern and safe mobility services for citizens.

During the visit, the Prime Minister inspected station facilities before receiving a briefing from El-Wazir on the status of the project. The minister said the first phase extends from Abu Qir Station to Misr Station in Alexandria over a distance of 22 kilometers and has reached an overall completion rate of 47%.

The phase includes 20 stations, comprising six ground-level stations and 14 elevated stations. The route includes a 6.5-kilometer surface section from Misr Station to just before El-Zaheria Station and a 15.5-kilometer elevated section extending to Abu Qir Station. The project will also be served by 21 trains totaling 189 carriages, which will be manufactured by the Egyptian National Railway Industries Company (NERIC).

Madbouly and El-Wazir boarded a dedicated track-car train at Mandara Station and traveled to Sidi Bishr Station, passing through Asafra and Miami stations, to inspect track works, station construction, and civil engineering activities on site.

The Prime Minister said the Alexandria Metro would significantly improve public transportation services in the governorate while supporting national efforts to expand sustainable and environmentally friendly transport systems. He stressed the importance of accelerating implementation while maintaining internationally recognized quality standards.

During the tour, El-Wazir outlined plans for the project’s second and third phases, which will bring the metro’s total length to 80 kilometers. The second phase will extend from El-Zaheria to Kilometer 21 in the Agami area, over 31 kilometers, and include 21 stations. The third phase will connect Kilometer 21 to Borg El Arab Airport through a 27-kilometer route with 10 stations.

The minister said the future network would provide a direct connection between Alexandria and Borg El Arab Airport while integrating with Line 1 of Egypt’s high-speed electric rail network. Studies are also underway to extend the line to New Abu Qir City to accommodate future population growth.

El-Wazir said the Alexandria Metro forms part of the ministry’s wider transportation development strategy for Alexandria, which includes upgrading roads, bridges, railways, electric transportation systems, and river and maritime transport.

He added that the metro project would improve safety by eliminating level crossings and road intersections while supporting economic and social development objectives across the governorate.

According to El-Wazir, the project will increase passenger capacity from 2,850 passengers per hour per direction to 60,000 passengers per hour per direction, reduce travel time from 50 minutes to 25 minutes, raise operating speeds from 25 kilometers per hour to 100 kilometers per hour, and cut train headways from 10 minutes to two and a half minutes.

The minister said the metro will also reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and noise levels, helping to ease traffic congestion and encourage greater use of public transportation.

He noted that the metro will be integrated with several transportation systems, including the Cairo-Alexandria railway at Misr and Sidi Gaber stations, the Raml Tram at Sidi Gaber and Victoria stations, and the Rashid railway line at Maamoura station. The network is also expected to connect with the high-speed electric rail line at Borg El Arab station in the future.

El-Wazir added that work is progressing in parallel on the rehabilitation and modernization of the Raml Tram, another major public transportation project aimed at expanding Alexandria’s green transport network and providing faster, safer, and more efficient mobility services.
