NTRA warns of global hacking attempts targeting mobile phones

Arab Finance: The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has urged citizens to strengthen phone security after Google and Apple disclosed advanced hacking attempts affecting users in more than 150 countries, including Egypt, as per a statement.

NTRA said initial findings show the attackers are exploiting previously unknown vulnerabilities and sending malicious links and messages that may appear to come from trusted sources.

The authority stressed that updating phones and applications remains the primary defense against such threats.

It advised users to activate automatic updates whenever possible, noting that each update includes fixes for vulnerabilities that attackers may try to exploit.

It also encouraged the use of advanced security settings, including Lockdown Mode on iPhones and enhanced protection options on Android devices, which help reduce exposure to spyware.

The NTRA warned citizens to remain cautious when dealing with links, messages, and attachments, especially those arriving from unfamiliar or suspicious sources, even if they appear legitimate. Many attacks, the statement said, depend on deceiving users into clicking malicious links.

To improve protection, the authority recommended using secure browsers and ad blockers to avoid harmful advertisements.

It also advised activating an additional verification code when logging into sensitive accounts such as email and social media, ensuring that unauthorized parties cannot access them even if they obtain the password.

NTRA emphasized the need for users to stay aware of evolving fraud tactics, whether by message, call, or link, and to pay attention to any unusual phone behavior, including sudden slowdowns, higher data usage, or unfamiliar applications.

The authority said it is monitoring the situation in coordination with international companies and relevant bodies in Egypt and is taking the necessary measures to protect mobile phone users nationwide.
