Egypt eyes expanded cooperation with Weatherford on advanced oil, gas technologies

Arab Finance: Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi met with Girish Saligram, President and CEO of US-based oilfield services company Weatherford International, to explore expanding cooperation on advanced technologies and digital solutions to boost Egypt’s oil and gas production while reducing operating costs, as per a statement.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC 2026), focused on improving operational efficiency, optimizing production from existing fields, and supporting Egypt’s plans to intensify exploration and drilling activities.

Badawi emphasized the importance of expanding the use of Weatherford’s technologies in well drilling, completion, and maintenance to improve production performance, particularly at mature fields.

The minister also highlighted the need to increase crude oil and natural gas recovery rates from existing reservoirs to offset natural production declines, lower costs, and improve the economic viability of petroleum operations.

In response, Saligram presented Weatherford’s latest technological and digital solutions, including real-time well performance monitoring, predictive maintenance systems, and integrated production management technologies. These applications could help operators identify and address operational challenges more quickly, improve asset performance, and make better use of available production capacity.

Beyond optimizing existing operations, the discussions explored Weatherford’s potential role in accelerating exploration and drilling activities across Egypt. Areas of cooperation included supplying advanced equipment and specialized technical services, alongside deploying technologies designed to shorten well drilling and completion timelines and bring new wells into production more quickly.

The two sides also examined opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Weatherford and Egyptian petroleum sector companies through technical services, knowledge transfer, workforce development, and specialized training programs aimed at improving operational efficiency.

Furthermore, they expressed interest in broadening their partnership in the coming period, drawing on Weatherford’s international expertise to support Egypt’s efforts to increase domestic crude oil and natural gas output, maximize the value of its petroleum resources, and reduce production and operating costs.
