Arab Finance: Huawei has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Al Wadi Al Jadid Company for Mineral Resources and Oil Shale (WADICO) to explore the development of a renewable-energy-based microgrid at WADICO’s site in Aswan Governorate, according to an emailed press release.
The MoU, signed on the sidelines of the Egypt Mining Forum 2026, provides for Huawei to supply the technical solutions required to develop the microgrid, which will have a total load capacity of 0.6 megawatts (MW). Commercial operations are targeted to commence on September 15, 2027.
The project will incorporate solar power technologies, battery energy storage systems, and digital solutions for energy monitoring and management. Huawei will also provide training and knowledge transfer to support a more efficient and reliable power supply at the site.
The initiative is expected to reduce diesel fuel consumption and emissions while improving energy efficiency and operational continuity. The two companies will also explore solutions to electrify mining operations, including electric vehicles, vehicle batteries, and charging infrastructure, supporting greater use of clean energy across WADICO’s operations.
Reda Selim, Chairman and Managing Director of WADICO, said: “Through our long-term collaboration with Huawei, we look forward to leveraging its expertise in digital power and renewable energy to develop solutions that support 24-hour power availability at mining sites, particularly in remote areas.”
Selim added: “We also look forward to expanding this collaboration with Huawei in the future to deploy solar and clean energy solutions across WADICO’s other sites, supporting the company’s growth plans and advancing its move toward more efficient and sustainable mining operations.”
Tony Bu, CEO of Digital Power at Huawei Egypt, said: “Our collaboration with WADICO presents an opportunity to leverage Huawei’s global expertise in digital power and apply it to the needs of Egypt’s mining sector.”
“Through this collaboration, we aim to bring this experience to the Egyptian market and adapt it to the specific requirements of mining operations and remote sites, opening the door to new applications of digital power across the sector while supporting greater energy efficiency, operational reliability, and sustainability,” the CEO mentioned.
