Egypt nominates former tourism minister for UNESCO director-general

Arab Finance: Egypt has nominated its former minister of tourism and antiquities Khaled El-Enany for the post of Director-General of the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the period from 2025 to 2029, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced in a press conference on April 5th.

The election is set to take place in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025, according to Ahram Online.

El-Enany served as Egypt’s Tourism and Antiquities Minister from December 22nd, 2019 to August 13th, 2022, and he also served as the Minister of Antiquities from March 23rd, 2016, to December 21st, 2019, being the first minister to hold the tourism and antiquities portfolios together since the separation of the ministries in 1966.

Since 1993, he has been a Professor of Egyptology at Helwan University’s Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management (FTH).

This is in addition to being the General Supervisor of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo from 2015 to 2016.

El-Enany was also an Associate Scientific Expert and Board Member at French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo (IFAO) from 2002 to 2016.

Egypt’s former minister of tourism and antiquities got his Ph.D. in Egyptology, UPV, Montpellier III University in 2001.
