Arab Finance: ABB in Egypt has inaugurated upgraded engineering laboratories at Ain Shams University’s Faculty of Engineering as part of its corporate social responsibility strategy and long-standing partnership with the university, as per an emailed press release.
The upgraded facilities include the Electrical & Motor Automation Laboratory and the Electrical Fundamentals Laboratory, which are designed to provide students with hands-on training in automation, electrification, and smart energy solutions.
The Electrical & Motor Automation Laboratory has been equipped with industrial Variable Speed Drives from ABB’s ACS880 series, HVAC training kits, and systems for motor starting, including soft starters and Star/Delta configurations installed in an ABB MNS low-voltage switchboard.
The laboratory also features a smart KNX system for controlling lighting through presence sensors, split air-conditioning units and window shutters. The system is expected to reduce energy consumption by between 30% and 40%.
The Electrical Fundamentals Laboratory provides practical training for students across eight academic programs within the university’s mechanical and electrical engineering departments.
The upgraded laboratories are expected to serve nearly 2,000 students annually and will undergo continuous development through a joint scientific committee, ABB said.
The inauguration was attended by Sweden’s Ambassador to Egypt Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt Thomas Baumgartner, ABB Egypt Chairman Ahmed Hammad, Ain Shams University President Mohamed Diaa Zain El-Abedeen and Faculty of Engineering Dean Amr Shaat.
The laboratory upgrades were carried out under a cooperation protocol between ABB Egypt and the Faculty of Engineering. The project initially focused on the Electrical & Motor Automation Laboratory before being expanded to include the Electrical Fundamentals Laboratory to increase the number of beneficiaries.
ABB’s partnership with Ain Shams University dates back to 1999, when the company contributed to upgrading the university’s low-voltage room and supplied control panels.
