El-Sisi reviews renewable energy, infrastructure projects

Arab Finance: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a high-level meeting to review the progress of renewable energy and infrastructure projects, including a 200-megawatt (MW) wind power plant in the Gulf of Suez, according to a statement.

The project is expected to support Egypt’s target of raising the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 45% by 2028, advancing the previous target of 42% by 2030.

During the meeting, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat noted that the government recently signed a contract to strengthen the national grid through a new 500-kilovolt (kV) overhead transmission line. It will transport wind-generated electricity from the Gulf of Suez to consumption centers nationwide as part of broader efforts to expand and modernize the unified electricity grid.

The meeting also addressed plans to expand renewable energy generation, deploy battery-based energy storage systems, develop supporting infrastructure, and strengthen international cooperation and partnerships in the sector.

Esmat outlined an overview of renewable energy generation and battery storage projects that have been completed, are under implementation, or are expected to enter service in the future.

El-Sisi stressed the importance of developing a more diversified and sustainable energy mix to strengthen energy security, cut emissions, optimize the use of natural resources, and lower reliance on fossil fuels.

The meeting also reviewed the status of green hydrogen projects and seawater desalination initiatives, including a planned desalination complex in the Dabaa area.

The complex is designed as an integrated facility employing advanced technologies and specialized expertise, alongside other desalination projects linked to existing power plants.
