Arab Finance: Minister of Communications and Information Technology Raafat Hindi witnessed the signing of an agreement between Telecom Egypt and Greek company Power Sub Link S.A. (PSL) to establish the Sharm El-Sheikh-Taba submarine cable, according to a statement.

The submarine cable, approximately 200 kilometers long, is expected to provide one of the shortest, fastest, and most secure routes for data transmission between Sharm El-Sheikh and Taba.

This marks a key step toward completing connectivity between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea through its connection to Egypt’s internet corridor.

Using the latest optical-fiber technologies, the cable will feature a high fiber count and a designed capacity of approximately 5 petabits to improve network performance, provide higher transmission capacities, and diversity of routing and connectivity options.

Meanwhile, the project is expected to become operational in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2027.

The new cable will extend Telecom Egypt's existing submarine fiber optic cable network across the Red Sea, reaching Taba and connecting it to landing points in Suez, Zafarana, Ras Gharib, and Sharm El-Sheikh.

The expansion will enhance the resilience of international connectivity, supporting the secure transmission of international data passing through and connected to Egypt between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Under the agreement, PSL will be responsible for implementing the submarine cable, leveraging its expertise in submarine cable engineering to develop this critical infrastructure.

In August, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt (NTRA) teamed up with Telecom Egypt and Huawei to complete Africa’s first trial of mobile services using the upper 6 GHz (U6GHz) frequency band.
