NAT signs 15-year O&M contract with DB–ELSEWEDY joint venture for Egypt’s high-speed rail

Arab Finance: The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has signed an operations and maintenance contract with a joint venture between Deutsche Bahn International Operations and Elsewedy Electric for Egypt’s high-speed rail network, as per a disclosure.

The agreement was signed today in Cairo during TransMEA, in the presence of Kamel El-Wazir, deputy prime minister for industrial development and minister of transport and industry.

Under the 15-year contract, the newly established entity “DB-ELSEWEDY for Rail Operations S.A.E” will operate Egypt’s first high-speed rail system, which covers more than 2,000 kilometers across three main lines and over 60 stations.

Deutsche Bahn’s role will be carried out through DB International Operations, its operations and maintenance subsidiary.

Its experience will be combined with Elsewedy Electric’s regional capabilities to support safety, reliability, efficiency, and sustainability targets in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.

The network will extend across the country, connecting cities, ports, and economic zones.

The Green Line will run from Al-Sokhna on the Red Sea to Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean via the New Administrative Capital, and is designed to carry up to one million passengers and 8,500 tons of goods per day.

The Blue Line will link 6th of October City to Abu Simbel through Luxor and Aswan, while the Red Line will connect Qena to Safaga and Hurghada.

The joint venture will use digital maintenance systems, updated operational approaches, and trained local teams to support passenger services, freight movement, and long-term asset management.
